Getting around Mauritius without renting a car

Buses are cheap and cover more than people think. They also stop at 6.30pm, which changes everything about your evenings.

You can see most of the coast on public transport for the price of a coffee. What you cannot do is eat dinner somewhere and get home.

The bus network

Fares run roughly 25 to 45 rupees for most journeys. Routes connect the main towns and coastal villages well, and the interior less so.

The 6.30pm problem

Most routes wind down between six and seven. Plan your evenings around a taxi or plan them within walking distance.
